Wait to Wash Berries to Prevent Premature Mold

Daily Kitchen Note

Washing berries before storing them introduces excess moisture that accelerates mold growth and mushiness. To keep berries fresh longer, store them dry and only rinse them under cool water immediately before eating.

How to Rinse with water before eating

  1. Store unwashed berries in the refrigerator crisper drawer in their original clamshell or a paper-towel-lined container.
  2. Wait to wash the berries until right before you are ready to eat or use them.
  3. Rinse the berries thoroughly under cool running water in a clean strainer, then pat dry with paper towels.

Why it works

Berries act like small sponges, absorbing any water they contact. This excess moisture creates an ideal environment for mold spores to grow and causes the fruit to quickly break down and turn mushy.
