Daily Kitchen Note
While a popular myth suggests storing an apple with potatoes prevents sprouting, the opposite is true. Keep potatoes away from apples and other ethylene-producing fruits to maximize their shelf life and prevent early sprouting.

How to Store potatoes separately
- Select a cool, dark, and dry location like a pantry or cellar, ideally between 45°F and 55°F (7°C to 12°C).
- Place unwashed potatoes in a well-ventilated container, such as a cardboard box, paper bag, or wire basket.
- Keep the potatoes completely separated from ethylene-producing fruits and vegetables, especially apples, bananas, and onions.
Why it works
Apples and many other fruits release ethylene gas as they ripen. Potatoes are highly sensitive to ethylene, which accelerates their aging process and triggers early sprouting and softening.
