Daily Kitchen Note

Raw red onion can overpower a salad or salsa. Soak thin slices in ice water for about five minutes, then drain and pat dry before using.

How to Soak slices in ice water

  1. Slice the red onion thinly.
  2. Place the slices in a bowl of ice water for about 5 minutes.
  3. Drain thoroughly and pat dry before adding to the dish.

Why it works

A brief cold-water soak mellows the onion’s surface sharpness while keeping the slices cool and crisp.
