Spoon-Peel a Kiwi for Clean Halves

Two hands hold a kiwi with its ends sliced off as a metal tablespoon is slid between skin and flesh

Daily Kitchen Note

Peeling a kiwi with a knife often removes too much of the sweet flesh along with the fuzzy skin. By slicing off the ends and sliding a spoon between the skin and the flesh, you can quickly and cleanly remove the peel with minimal waste.

How to Peel with spoon

  1. Using a sharp knife, slice off the top and bottom ends of the kiwi to expose the flesh.
  2. Insert the bowl of a tablespoon just under the skin of the kiwi.
  3. Gently slide the spoon around the entire perimeter of the fruit, keeping it close to the skin to separate the flesh.
  4. Push the peeled kiwi out of the skin or lift it out with the spoon.

Why it works

The curved shape of a tablespoon naturally follows the contour of the kiwi, allowing it to cleanly separate the soft flesh from the tough skin without cutting into the fruit.
